Thanking donors shows sincere gratitude – assures the donors that they made the right choice giving to your organization, builds a deeper relationship, and it closes the cycle of giving which clears the path for the next ask/donation.
Here are some great tips on how to thank your donors well.
- Write and send a warm, sincere letter or handwritten note.
- Personalize it!
- Use their name, not fill-in-the-blank or “Dear Friend.”
- Add a handwritten, personal note to the letter.
- Use a real signature on the letter, not a scanned signature or a cursive font.
- If you are emailing – send it immediately. If mail — send it within 48 hours.
- Make it conversational and easy to read, with short sentences and paragraphs.
- Let the thanks be the only purpose — don’t ask for another gift.
- Let the donor know what you are going to do with their money.
- Use the words “you” and “I” as much as possible — not “we” and “our.”
- Give the name and phone/email of a specific person the donor can reach with questions.
- Change and freshen up the letter each month.
